In this chapter, you will probably detect something of a bias towards Old Norse, especially in the sections on words from Insular Scots, the Scots of Orkney and Shetland. This is not the result of a Viking twisting my arm during the editorial process, but simply reflects the impact that the sea has had on the language of these communities over the centuries.
