- the town of Musselburgh in Midlothian takes its name from the nearby mussel beds and is first recorded in charters dating from the eleventh century. Mussel Bed in Ross-shire and Mussel Craig in Aberdeenshire provide further examples of the use of the term in place-names, although in Mussel Craig the term may refer to the shape of the craig or hill, rather than its actual proximity to molluscs.
