Chapter intro

Holm

- although used throughout the country in names denoting meadowland or low-lying land beside a river, as in Broomholm and Langholm in Dumfriesshire, this term has a different application in the Northern Isles. In Orkney and Shetland, holm more usually denotes a small grassy island in a loch or off the coast of the larger islands. These small islets are generally uninhabited and used as pasturage for sheep. Examples include Muckle Green Holm in Orkney and Lady's Holm in Shetland.
