Chapter intro

Sound

- several inlets of the sea and narrow channels of water around Scotland have specific names in which this term is combined with another place-name or island-name. In the north-west of Scotland, for example, between the Ardnish and Ardnamurchan peninsulas, you will find the Sound of Arisaig, recently designated a marine Special Area of Conservation. The island of Raasay is separated from Skye by the Sound of Raasay, and the Sound of Rum lies between the islands of Rum and Eigg. The Sounds of Eigg and Muck largely exist to inspire quips from punning tourists.
