Chapter intro

Skerrie

- these are isolated rocks or islets in the sea, often covered at high tide. When used in the plural, skerries, the word refers to a chain of rocks, or a reef. It occurs in such names as Oot Skerries and Ve Skerries in Shetland. The Scottish ballad, The Great Silkie of Sule Skerrie, provides a cautionary tale about the creatures that may be encountered in Scotland's coastal waters. The eponymous hero is a man, upo the lan, An... a silkie in the sea. Maids should be wary of this half-man, half-seal, who might leave them with a supernatural bairn if they give in to his charms.
