Chapter intro

Strand

- sometimes this term refers to a river, but it can also denote the land bordering a river or the sea. Literary uses of strand date back to the Middle Ages, and include William Dunbar's poetic description of 'schip-wrichtis (ship-builders), hewand (cutting wood) upone the strand'. In Robert Burns' poem (and song), It Was A' For Our Rightfu' King, it is clear that he is referring to the coast, when he writes 'We left fair Scotland's strand'. Minor names and street-names of coastal areas often incorporate this term, such as North and South Strand Street in Stranraer.
