Chapter intro

Geo

- frequently found in place-names in Caithness and the Northern Isles, a geo is as an inlet of the sea. It derives from Old Norse gjá 'cleft, chasm', and in Orkney often indicates a ravine. Names including this term are frequently located in places with a dramatic and rugged coastline, as at Wife Geo in Caithness, Sultigeo in Orkney and Calder's Geo in Shetland.
