Chapter intro

Bank

- in Old Scots the term sea-bank was used to refer to the coast or sea-shore, as attested by the many Seabank Roads in Scotland's coastal towns and cities. A bank, in place-names, is usually an edge of some kind, and the many Bankheads and Bankends typically refer to river-banks. Bank names often contain the names of local plants – in Sauchiebank in Edinburgh, sauchie means 'willowy, growing with willows'.
