Chapter intro

Shon

- in Shetland and Caithness, one of the words for a small loch or pool is shon, also used in the phrase a shon of water to indicate a temporary pool, or a water-filled pit. According to Jakob Jakobsen's Etymological Dictionary of the Norn Language in Shetland (1928–32), this term is frequently found in the names of small lakes, and could also be used of a swamp.
