Chapter intro

Stank

- despite looking like a well-known past tense, this word has nothing necessarily to do with unpleasant odours. Derived from Old French estanc, 'stretch of (stagnant) shallow water', which becomes étang 'pond' in modern French, stank has several uses in modern Scots. It is perhaps best known as a Scots word for a drain or gutter (alongside other French-derived terms such as cundie and syver), but a stank can also be a pond, pool or swamp. There are several examples of field-names and minor names such as Stankhead, Stankend and Mill Stank containing this term, found across the country.
