Chapter intro

Pobie

- this term for a peak or high hill is only found in Shetland place-names and is Scandinavian in origin. A 1903 quotation recorded in the Scottish National Dictionary from Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary provides the following information:

Fishermen all round these islands speak of the 'Pobies o' Unst', i.e. Saxavord Hill, 'da Muckle Pobie’, and the Hjoag o' Crusifell, 'Pobie littla'.

Such names are not always recorded on maps, although they are often well known locally.
