- although not especially frequent in Scottish place-names, there are a number of pikes in the Borders, including The Pike in Roxburgh and Pike Fell near Langholm. There are many pikes in the English Lake District and, pike being of Scandinavian origin, it is no surprise that the distribution of these place-names corresponds to the areas of Britain that saw heavy Anglo-Scandinavian settlement in the Middle Ages.
