- although no longer in use as a general Scots word, pen was used until at least the nineteenth century to indicate a pointed, conical hill. The term derives from a P-Celtic word, and is the ancestor of modern Welsh pen 'head'. Place-names with pen include Ettrick Pen, Skelfhill Pen and Pennygant Hill near Hawick in the Borders.
