Law

- derived from Old English hlǣw 'mound, cairn, hill, mountain', this term is frequently found in the place-names of southern and eastern Scotland, in areas most directly affected by medieval settlers from northern England. Some well-known Scottish laws are Dundee Law, Largo Law, Berwick Law and Broad Law. Also weel-kent is Traprain Law in Lothian, where early twentieth-century archaeologists discovered a significant hoard of Roman silver artefacts, now in the care of the Royal Museum of Scotland.
