Chapter intro

Mounth

- the word is derived from Gaelic monadh 'mountain range', and can also denote hilly barren country or high ground. When used in the phrase The Mounth, it describes the mountains of the eastern Highlands, specifically the eastern Grampians of Angus and Kincardineshire, south of the Dee. Spellings of the name have varied over time, and month is common in older texts. The medieval Asloan Manuscript reports that Malcome Canmor ... chasit (chased) Makbeth our (over) the Month to Lumfannane.
