Chapter intro

Knowe

- a knowe is usually a small knoll or hilltop, but some are considerably more substantial. Fifescar Knowe in the Manor Hills rises to a height of over 800 metres. This word is used in Scots and northern English, and like its southern cousin knoll, derives from Old English cnoll. Knowes can be found in Scottish literature, as in Robert Burns' poem Ca' the yowes to the knowes (1794) and Sir Walter Scott's description in his novel, The Black Dwarf (1816), of the 'bonny broomy knowe'.
