Chapter intro

Knock

- this Scots term for a hill is derived from Gaelic cnoc 'hillock', found in names such as Knockhill in Fife. Here, the original name Knock has been modified by the later addition of -hill. Such changes provide insights into Scotland's history, and in this case it seems that a wave of immigrants who knew little or no Gaelic decided to reform the name to mean the hill at Knock, unaware that Knock also meant 'hill'.
