Chapter intro

Shin

- like shank, shin is found in the names of places that resemble that part of the body, usually ridges of steep hillsides, or projecting areas of high ground. From its name, Catcleugh Shin in the Scottish Borders may once have been the haunt of wildcats. George Watson's Roxburghshire Word Book (1923) also notes the use of shin-end as a term for the lower end of the slope of a hill.
