Chapter intro

Shank

- words for parts of the body are often used figuratively to indicate the shapes of specific features in the landscape. Shank, as a term meaning 'leg', is used in place-names to describe the downward spur or slope of a hill. In some cases, as in the Shank of Inchgrundle in the Grampians, the term has been added to an older Gaelic name, but names like Shankend Hill in the Borders reflect use of terminology shared between Scots and English.
