Chapter intro

Scaur

- a scaur or scar is usually a sheer rock or precipice, or a steep eroded hill. Kippford near Kirkcudbright is known locally as The Scaur, and the Scaur o' Doon Road in Ayr is named after the steep bank of the River Doon. The term is sometimes applied to a bank of gravel stretching out from the shore, as in Howgarth Scar and Powfoot Scar in Dumfries and Galloway.
