- a kip is usually a pointed hill, and the word kip has a variety of other meanings relating to pointed things that point upwards — cattle described as kippie have upturned horns, and someone who is kip-nebbit has an upturned nose. Several hills have the straightforward designation 'The Kip' and in the Pentland Hills are East and West Kip. The term is thought to be related to Middle Dutch kippe and Middle Low German kippe meaning 'point, peak, tip'.
