Chapter intro

Hope

- in the place-names of southern Scotland and northern England, this term is often associated with small enclosed upland valleys or hollows amongst hills. It is represented in Dryhope in Selkirkshire and Hopehead Burn in Peebles and derives from the Old English word hop, with the same sense. Coastal names containing hope may instead be derived from Old Norse hóp, 'a small land-locked bay or inlet'.
