Chapter intro

Holm

- denoting a meadow, or stretch of low-lying land beside a river, holm is found in a variety of Lowland names including Broomholm and Lyneholm in Dumfriesshire, and Gadgirth Holm and Millholm in Ayrshire. The word derives from Old Norse hólmr, which can mean either a meadow, as in these south-western names, or an islet, as is the case for many of the names incorporating holm in the Northern Isles.
