Chapter intro

Glen

- an archetypically Scottish word, glen is derived from Gaelic glenn, gleann. Historical forms of some names containing glen, such as Rutherglen in Lanarkshire, are found as early as the twelfth century. Many of the most famous (and most picturesque) Scottish glens, particularly those located in the Highlands of Scotland, represent original Gaelic rather than later Scots coinages. Examples include Glen Coe, Glen Etive, Glen Nevis, Glen Spean and Glen Shee.
