Chapter intro

Fank

- this term for an enclosure for farm animals derives from Gaelic fang and occurs in minor names such as Fank Wood in Argyll and Fank Burn in Perthshire. It was sometimes used of cattle-fairs, which were usually held near such enclosures, as attested by the Statistical Account of Scotland for Argyllshire (1834-45):

Formerly there were several small fairs, called Fanks in the parish [of Ardnamurchan].
