Chapter intro

Bucht

- in place-names, it is often difficult to distinguish the term bught, 'a sheep-fold', from bught, 'a bend', although sometimes the context provides a clue. In the case of the Kirkcudbrightshire name Sheep Bught Rock, for example, we can be fairly certain that there is or was a sheep-fold at this location. In the Borders you will find such names as Buchtrig and Bucht Sike, in Lanarkshire, Bucht Slack, and in Ayrshire, Bucht Burn.
