- if you are travelling around Scotland, particularly in the Northern and Western Isles, you are likely to encounter one of the prehistoric round towers known as brochs. Especially well-preserved examples can be seen, dominating the skyline, on the Island of Mousa in Shetland and at Dun Carloway on the Isle of Lewis. There are around 500 known brochs in Scotland, though many are badly ruined.
