Yowe

- ewe. In the famous song by Robert Burns, Ca the yowes tae the knowes means 'drive the sheep to the hills'.

Ca (from call) is used in the sense of drive or turn. So you can ca horses or a skipping rope or a handle.

A Scots version of 'one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel' is

ae scabbit yowe spyles twinty flocks.

The yowe-trummle is a cold spell in early summer about the time of sheep-shearing, which would make the sheep shiver a bit.

Yowe or yowie is also used of a fir cone, from its resemblance to a curly-woolly sheep.
