Chapter intro

Sparhalk

(obsolete) the sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus. At a mere three shillings, the sparhalk was a lot less costly than a papingo:

Gevin to a man … that brocht a spar halk to the King iij s.

(Compota thesaurariorum Regum Scotorum 1473)

This seems a very reasonable amount for such a spirited hunter, capable of providing a good meal:

[He] slew 6 partridges with a spar hauke

(JOHN ERSKINE Journal of the Hon. John Erskine of Carnock 1683)

Of course there was the additional cost of equipment and again this is duly noted in the Compota thesaurariorum Regum Scotorum (1587):

Tua dosane of spar halk bellis L s. [50 shillings].
