Chapter intro

Gorb, gorbie, gorbet

 – an unfledged bird.

The gorbets, there's but three;
An' sune they'll flap their little wings,
An' try frae hame tae flee

(JOHN FULLERTON Poems 1905)

Clergymen are sometimes referred to as God's gorbies and John Galt makes it clear in Literary Life and Miscellanies (1834) that no lack of reverence is intended:

The clergy are God's gorbies, and for their Master's sake it behoves us to respect them.
