Chapter intro

Brock

- badger. There are many place-names (such as Broxburn and Broxden) which have brock, in some form, as an element, testifying to the wide distribution of these animals. In spite of being a retiring and charming animal, brock is often used as an insult, sometimes in reference to their tendency to smell. One of the dogs in Burns' poem The Twa Dugs (1786) compares the attitude of the upper classes to the poor with his own contempt of badgers:

They gang as saucy by poor folk, As I wad by a stinkan brock.

According to Robert Henryson

Bayth the bellox of ane brok... Is gud for the host [cough].

However, if a badger's testicles are not available, you could try a hot whisky with honey and lemon instead.
