Chapter intro

Yill

- ale. To combine Gluttony with Avarice, follow this example from Sir Walter Scott’s Rob Roy (1817): I never gang to the yillhouse - that is unless ony neighbour was to gie me a pint. Two pieces of advice which make excellent sense when taken together are Yill-seasoned haivers [foolish talk], Are no worth a plack [a coin of small value] and Yuill-sellers shouldna be story tellers. These come from John White’s Jottings (1879) and John Service’s Dr Duguid (1887).
