Chapter intro

To set or turn out the brunt[burnt] side o yer shin

- to be proud of yourself, to hold your head high. Allan Ramsay uses this expression and defends the justifiable pride of poets in their own work in a poem of 1719: Set out the burnt Side of your Shin, For Pride in Poets is nae Sin. Why anyone should burn their shins in the first place is not certain.
