Chapter intro

Gled

- kite. This bird of prey is frequently modified by the adjective greedy by such writers as James Hogg (1832): The greedy gleds and gairly fowls. A chilling instance comes from Gavin Douglas’s Aeneid (1513): The gredy gled. . . wachand the chiknys lyte, Thar deth mannasand [menacing] and it is a wonder that the gled in the Wyf of Auchtermuchty ever got airborne again: By thair cumis the gredy gled, And likkit vp fyve [goslings].
