Chapter intro

Bigsy

- conceited. Scots are often sparing with praise in case people get bigsy, but some there are some characters for whom being bigsy is part of their nature. The frog in John Caie’s poem was one such – and he came to a bad end:

The bigsy wee cratur was feelin that prood,
He gapit his mou an he croakit oot lood:
“Gin ye’d a’ like tae see a richt puddock,” quo he,
“Ye’ll never, I’ll sweer, get a better nor me.”
