Chapter intro

Aquavite

- aqua vitæ, whisky, ‘water of life’. The Historie of Scotland by Johne Leslie, translated by James Dalrymple (1596) observes that In this cuntrie thay lykwyse sell aqua vitae, quhilk [which] heir in place of wine thay commonlie vse. The Laing Manuscript of 1658 mentions a mouthwatering occasion: A teastting of our wastland hearrings [a tasting of our westland herrings] and Glasgowe acquavytie to disgestt them. But there were abuses such as the Frequent prophanation of the Lordes day in this paroich by aquavitey bearers, disapproved of by the Dingwall Presbytery in 1649.
