Chapter intro

Winter Saturday

- the last Saturday in October, when the winter half of the year is considered to begin. For some, the winter was a time of privation and suffering. The inhabitants of Fair Isle, however, made the most of it. The Scots Magazine (August 1931) tells us Wintertime is the islanders’ time for enjoyment. “Lifts” or parties are held in the different crofts, the name “lift” no doubt meaning the time when the crops are gathered in and safely stored away for the winter.
