The Sunday Mail (11 August 2002) reads: Drive into town with Mum who looks at the rivers of water running down the pavement and announces “Och, there’s been a thunder plump”. A what? A thunderplump, she says, is what people from the north-east call a sudden downpour. . . great expression. In spite of what ‘Mum’ in this quotation says, the expression is used widely throughout Scotland.
