Chapter intro

The Grey Man of Ben Macdhui

A mystery lurks on the summit of Scotland’s second highest mountain. There have been many reports by climbers and hill-walkers who have heard the sound of footsteps behind them and have even seen a large grey figure. The experience is usually accompanied by feelings of panic. Does Scotland have its very own Yeti or Bigfoot?

The Grey Man of Ben Macdui is far too dangerous to be chased off in a panic in poor visibility. So if you do meet the Grey man, take comfort from the fact that it is almost certainly a Brocken spectre, so named after the Brocken in the Harz Mountains in Germany.

The Brocken spectre is nothing more threatening than the shadow of the climber on the mist. So do not panic. Wait until the mist clears and you can make your way down in safety but if, while you are waiting, the Grey Man of Ben Macdhui engages you in conversation, be sure to let us know.
