Growin shoorie

a welcome shower to help the young crops grow. We find this in Mary Johnston’s Ryen [rain] (2007), which she prefaces with a North East saying: ‘Dinna fash, ryen winna ging faarer than yer skin’. [Don’t worry, rain won’t go further than your skin.]

Spirken, spitten, drappie weet,
growin shoories, poor doons.
hale waater, teemin ryen,
thunder plumps, ondyngs.
Bit, smoocherin, smirr, smaa weet
daats [caresses] yer face wi smeerichs, [kisses]
hings diamonds on yer winkers, [eyelashes]
spairges [scatters] opals in yer hair.
