Chapter intro

Flanders Frost

- a frost accompanied by a south-east gale. Christopher Rush in A Twelvemonth and a Day (1985) relates: One year there was a Flanders frost in February. That was the name the old folk gave to a south-east gale that carried a frost as hard as armour – and many of the smaller craft hadn’t put to sea for over a week.
