A Chap [knock] at the bar is the noise of the waves on the pebbly beach along the Banff coast. If the noise comes from the east in winter, expect frost. If the sound comes from the west, a thaw is on its way. (On a coastline that runs east-west, this is not entirely surprising since an east wind carrying the sound is blowing from Siberia, but a west wind is a warmer one off the gulf stream.)
