- one of a series of spells of cold weather occurring approximately at the same time each year, according to a theory based on weather statistics put forward by Alexander Buchan (1827–1907) of Kinnesswood, Kinrossshire, in 1867. These cold spells are 7-14 February, 11-14 April, 29 June – 14 July, 6-11 August and 6-13 November.
