Chapter intro

Blaw, blaa, blyave, blyauve

- blast, gust, blow. The different forms of this word show some of the regional differences in Scots. While blaw is the usual form in West and Central Scotland, blaa will be heard more in the East and up the East coast. The North East is often the home of some distinctive forms and that is where you might hear blyave or blyauve.

It is not only the wind that blaws. A very young bagpiper, being interviewed on TV, was asked for the secret of his success. ‘Och, A jist sook and blaw,’ he replied.
