- as in English, a toll was a checkpoint on a turnpike road where monies were collected. This was also known as a toll-bar, a point not overlooked by punning publicans in more recent times. There are a large number of street-names and local names commemorating tolls. Examples include Eglinton Toll in Glasgow, Tollcross in Edinburgh, The Auld Toll on Stirling Road in Perthshire and The Toll at the boundary on the main road between Prestwick and Ayr in Ayrshire.
