- like shiel, this term can refer to either a shelter used by shepherds in high or remote areas of pasture land, or the pasture land itself. Both meanings were still in use until the twentieth century and shielings were often mentioned in charters, especially in the lists of the parts of an estate. Names containing this term include Shieling Burn in Argyllshire and Shieling Rig in Dumfriesshire.
