Sheuch
- also spelled sheugh, this term can denote a gutter in a street, or a ditch or drain, though in street-names it more commonly refers to a narrow lane between houses. The -ch or -gh at the end of the word is pronounced like the -ch in loch (rather like the -ch in Bach), but despite the guttural delights of its pronunciation, some of the streets that were once known as sheuchs have since been given alternative names. For example, a lane in Prestwick, in Ayrshire, is known locally as The Puddock Sheuch although this is not the name on the street-sign. It is no longer commonly frequented by puddocks (frogs/toads).
