Chapter intro

Shaw

- denoting a small wood, especially one that grows naturally, or without cultivation, this term occasionally appears in literary texts, but is otherwise rarely used. There are many examples of shaw in place-names, including Wishaw in Lanarkshire, Stanley Shaw near Paisley and Pollokshaws in Glasgow, sometimes abbreviated as The Shaws. The word derives from Old English sceaga 'thicket, small wood'.
