Chapter intro

Peck

- this word is not usually associated with rivers but, in local use in Dumfriesshire, it is figuratively applied to the great hollow shaped like a peck measure, from which the River Annan rises, also known as the Devil's Beef-tub. A reference to this use of the name can be found in the Statistical Account of Scotland for Dumfriesshire (1791-99):

The spring of the Annan,... called the 'Annan Peck', or the Marquis of Annandale's 'Beef Stand'.
