Chapter intro

Muir

- both Scots muir and English moor are descended from the Old English word mōr, which could originally denote both marshland and uncultivated ground. The Scots word has had various meanings over time, and in place-names it typically refers to moorland or uncultivated land. In the past, muirs could be held as part of an estate or could belong collectively to a local community. Many names include this term and there are many instances of the same name appearing in different parts of the country. Muirhead occurs in Angus, Fife, Lanarkshire and Ayrshire; Grangemuir in Fife and Ayrshire; and Muirhouses in Perth, Angus and Stirlingshire.
